Hello/ Grandkids

Hello everyone how are you doing? I hope your all well and enjoying your weekend. Here’s how mine started off…..

I woke up at 5am which is normal for me. I love waking up early and enjoying a cup of coffee while everyone else is sleeping.

My youngest grandson is spending the weekend with me and I knew the minute he woke up he was going to keep me busy. I got out of bed, went into the kitchen and started the coffee.

My coffee pot takes a long time so I figured I would jump in the shower and get that out of the way. Afterwards I am dressed and leave the bathroom. I head for the kitchen and notice my grandson, wide awake, sitting on the couch.

So there he is sitting on the couch with a huge smile on his adorable little face. He looks over at me and says, “Grandma come sit by me, look what I got”. He moves his blanket and there on his lap as well as spilling over next to him, are tons of snacks.

That child, from what I could see from where I was standing, had hot chips, gum, soda, crackers, candy, and a bottle water, which I assumed was for me since I always have one wherever I go.

So first off I am thinking how the heck did this kid grab all these snacks so quickly and quietly when he was sound asleep not that long ago,  and secondly I am silently asking myself should I make him put it all back and go back to bed or sit and join him.

It is now about 5:20am. He was super excited, he thought by surprising me with all those snacks that I would be excited too.

I explained to him that it was very early and showed him that it was still dark. The sun wasn’t even up yet. I also have a rule of no eating on the couch. But he looks at me and says “But grandma I even have these for you” and he hands me a soft granola bar, knowing that’s what I like.

He’s 6 years old. He woke up when he heard me get up, went into the kitchen and grabbed some snacks, not just for himself but for me as well. He thought it would be fun to surprise me and have a picnic on the couch with him.

Even though I know the responsible thing would have been to make him put it all back and go back to sleep, I decided not to do that.

I told him to scoot over and make room for me on the couch, I put some of the snacks to the side (the ones he couldn’t have, like the hot chips) and there we sat for the next hour eating and watching cartoons.

Soon as the sun came out and warmed the air, we went outside to water the plants. Actually he rode his scooter and I did the watering.

Several hours have now passed and we are both back on the couch. I am enjoying my second cup of coffee and my grandson is sound asleep.

I never let the kids eat junk food early in the morning and I never let them eat on the couch. I try to be the fun grandma but I also have rules that they need to follow. But…..

But, sometimes it’s nice to break the rules and make memories instead. My grandson may or may not remember years from now that him and his grandma had a junk food picnic on the living room couch early in the morning while it was still dark outside, but then again maybe he will.

Have a fantastic weekend and make some special memories 😊

  1. Yeah, he will remember. I do the breaking of the rules with the grandchildren in our family. One daughter-in-law and my wife are both furious that I undercut them. I don’t do it on purpose but grandchildren have a way of melting my resolve. The funny part is the DIL and my wife do not get along even though they think exactly the same about the same rules.
